Daylight can make a wet edge easier to see, but color and staining still cannot identify the source or water safety. Mark height, direction, and time instead.
Sketch the room perimeter, doors, major fixtures, visible controls, first wet or changed point, and adjacent rooms. Add another level only when there is actual evidence there.
Keep the route clear for a provider and protect private papers, medications, valuables, and access codes. Do not move a connected appliance or unstable fixture.

Match water to supply fill, machine movement, pump-out, standpipe, or floor path.
Observe from a dry stable edge and note electrical, structural, or wastewater hazards.
Distinguish hose, irrigation, roof runoff, surface drainage, meter, and service-line questions.
